The LORD called to him out of the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the people of Israel: ‘You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.’” – Exodus 19:3-4 (ESV)

Patterns of Evidence Returns to Theaters – Preview a Scene From the New Film

We are gearing up for the release of the new film Journey to Mount Sinai on the evenings of October 17 & 18. One of the aspects the film explores is the attributes of Mount Sinai as described in the biblical account. Tim will be searching for these attributes at the various proposed mountain locations to help identify the true location of Mount Sinai.

The Bible lists several important attributes for Mount Sinai including the fact that it hosted the Israelite camp at its base for nearly a year. This requires any Mount Sinai candidate to have a plain beneath the mountain large enough to accommodate the Israelites. This narrows the field considerably because most mountains are found in the middle of a range of peaks without much space at their base.

Scholars debate the size of the Israelite population involved in the exodus from Egypt, but the range of estimates can be used to gain clarity about which mountains qualify as fitting this biblical requirement.

Enjoy this SNEAK PEEK addressing the question of campsite size for the upcoming film Patterns of Evidence: Journey to Mount Sinai.

The Attributes of Mount Sinai Step of the Investigation

The Attributes of Mount Sinai is one of the major search criteria seen in the film, and by using the scorecard you can grade each mountain according to the search criteria. The scorecard can be downloaded from our website and it doubles as a handy Bible Study tool to help familiarize you with these steps of the investigation even before viewing the film.

Here are the Attributes for Mount Sinai as seen on the Mount Sinai Scorecard. These factors will be investigated for six different Mount Sinai candidates in total. Three in Journey to Mount Sinai and three more in Journey to Mount Sinai II, which will be released in the first half of 2023.

ATTRIBUTES

Large Plain – Exodus 19:2, Numbers chapters 1-2

They set out from Rephidim and came into the wilderness of Sinai, and they encamped in the wilderness. There Israel encamped before the mountain… (Ex. 19:2)

Based on various interpretations of the Hebrew word “aleph” (typically meaning thousand), there would have been thousands to millions of Israelites camping at Mount Sinai. In light of this, there must be a large plain at the mountain.

Enough Water – Exodus 19:10-11, Numbers 1:1-54, 10:11-12

The Lord said to Moses, ‘Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their garments and be ready for the third day…’ (Ex. 19:10-11)

The Bible says that the Israelites were able to wash their clothes at Sinai. Considering their population size, their large flocks and herds, and the fact they were at the mountain for nearly a year, the site needed to have a very large supply of water.

Stream – Deuteronomy 9:21

“…grinding it very small, until it was as fine as dust. And I threw the dust of it into the brook that ran down from the mountain.” (Deut. 9:21)

We know that a brook or stream came down Mount Sinai into which Moses threw the dust of the golden calf.

Cave – 1 Kings 19:8-13

And he arose and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mount of God. There he came to a cave and lodged in it… (1 Ki. 19:8-9)

Mount Sinai must have a cave that the prophet Elijah could have taken refuge in.
