Journey to Mount Sinai – New Film Scorecard

The official poster and scorecard for Patterns of Evidence: Journey to Mount Sinai

SUMMARY: The October 17-18  release of the new Patterns of Evidence film – Journey to Mount Sinai will feature a scorecard for viewers to grade the evidence for each Mount Sinai candidate. Get your tickets today!

…But Moses fled from Pharaoh and stayed in the land of Midian. And he sat down by a well. – Exodus 2:15 (ESV)

New Scorecard Allows You to Rate Six Mount Sinai Location Candidates

We are currently putting the finishing touches on our new Patterns of Evidence film, Journey to Mount Sinai. It’s due in theaters nationwide as a FATHOM EVENT this October 17 & 18 (see release and ticket information below).

I’ve been exploring the topic of the location of Mount Sinai for over 20 years, and one of the things that excites me the most is the new development of a scorecard that viewers can use to follow along with the investigation.

There are many different viewpoints and alternate mountains proposed for Mount Sinai, so we needed a way to organize and simplify the main biblical criteria of the investigation as they apply to six primary candidates for Mount Sinai. These locations can be found on both the Sinai and Arabian peninsulas. Three sites will be covered in the first film and three more in Journey to Mount Sinai II to be released early next year.

Scorecard Doubles as a Bible Study Tool

The great thing about the Scorecard is that it can also be used as a Bible study tool before you even enter the theater. By reviewing what the Bible says about the journey from the miraculous sea crossing to Mount Sinai, as well as features for the mountain itself, you can have a better perspective when assessing the various claims made by scholars.

Investigating these features will also give you a greater appreciation and depth of understanding for the biblical account of the Israelites’ journey. When someone mentions the challenges faced by the Israelites or highlights a particular event, you’ll have a greater insight to their point.

What Does the Bible Say About Mount Sinai?

The Bible gives five main biblical criteria for the location of Mount Sinai. These include:

Journey to the Mountain – including a series of campsites, wildernesses and a total travel time for the trip from Egypt of 45-60 days..

Midian – the land where Moses lived with Jethro the priest for 40 years, during which time he encountered the burning bush at Mount Sinai.

Backside of the Wilderness – where Moses traveled from Jethro’s home to reach the mountain of God (Mount Sinai).

Attributes – the physical features of the mountain.

Artifacts – the possibility that archaeological remains still exist from the Israelites’ nearly year-long stay at the mountain.

These criteria will be used to determine if there is a pattern of evidence for the real location of Mount Sinai.

Can we find a Pattern of Evidence?

Here is an example of the biblical criteria for the first step:

JOURNEY TO THE MOUNTAIN

  • Campsites

And they set out from Alush and camped at Rephidim, where there was no water for the people to drink. (Num. 33:14)

The Israelites are recorded as stopping at 7 campsites between the miraculous crossing of the Red Sea and Mount Sinai. The full list is recorded in the Book of Numbers chapter 33, while Exodus records only some of the stops, but with more details of events along the way. – Exodus 15:22-17:16, Numbers 33:1-15

  • Wildernesses

Then Moses made Israel set out from the Red Sea, and they went into the wilderness of Shur… (Ex. 15:22)

After crossing the sea, the Israelites entered the wilderness of Shur (also called Etham), a dry land where they traveled three days before finding bitter water at the Marah campsite. After a second camp at the Red Sea, they entered the wilderness of Sin where Manna was introduced. After the camp of Rephidim, they entered the wilderness of Sinai, which contained the mountain. – Exodus 15:22, 16:1-17:1, 19:1-2, Numbers 33:8, 11, 15.

  • Travel Time

On the third new moon [month] after the people of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, on that day they came into the wilderness of Sinai. (Ex. 19:1)

The Bible gives a total timeframe of 45 to 60 days from leaving Goshen to reaching Mount Sinai based on their departure, their entrance into the wilderness of Sin, and different interpretations of Exodus 19:1 when they arrived at Mount Sinai. – Numbers 33:3, Exodus 16:1, 19:1
